SCA Non-profit Status

The SCA is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit (or not-for-profit) educational organization.

Note: Per the IRS (5/24/07) - "non-profit" and "not-for-profit" are interchangeable terms.

Make sure to mention this when contacting sites and vendors as some of them offer discounts or exempt purchases from taxes to non-profit organizations. Always ask ahead of time. Some stores will require pre-registration before you can use this discount. For example: Home Depot requires you to register online with their company before going down to one of their stores. On the other hand, Lowe's requires you to register with their Customer Service Desk at the store before checking out the first time.

Non Profit Status Letter

The SCA was granted 501(c)(3) status in January 1971. This status is considered renewed each year unless information is received by the SCA Corporate office that would change this status. The IRS does not issue a new letter every year. A reassurance letter of our status was issued January 30, 2001. A copy of this letter can be given to any site/vendor that requires documentation of our non-profit status. In order to confirm that our status hasn't changed, the site/vendor can call the IRS (1-877-829-5500) and give them our Federal ID Number (94-1698556) - this information can also be found at the top right hand corner of the letter.

When the Non Profit Status Letter can be Used

Keep in mind that this can only be used for valid purchases to run an official SCA event (ie: food, site token supplies, etc). It cannot be used for items for personal use, such as alcohol. Please see the Kingdom Financial Policies (section VI D) and the Exchequer Handbook - Local (chapter 3, section IV and V) for detailed information on allowed / disallowed expenses.
